The novel I Sat Down by the River Piedra by Paulo Coelho represents an inner journey to know oneself and connect with the sacred through mythological elements. This journey symbolizes the search for meaning and the connection of man to the deeper layers of existence. In this study, with a descriptive-analytical approach and with the aim of explaining the narrative structure and symbolic content in Coelho's novel, it examines the role of these mythological elements in realizing the hero's transformation. The main problem of the research focuses on the intersection of the structural pattern of Campbell's Hero's Journey and the function of archetypal symbols in organizing the work's transformative narrative.
The results of the two-layer analysis of this research show that Pilar's journey in this novel clearly corresponds to the mythological pattern of Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. The characters of the story, like mythical heroes, achieve transformation and rebirth by overcoming the stage of familiarization. In this work, the symbols of river, mountain, cave, well, and moon are used to explain the heroes' objective and psychological journey and to encode the stages of the hero's transformation. The findings of this study show that mythical patterns provide the necessary content and structural foundation for understanding the hero's journey towards self-knowledge.
