The Shahnameh, as one of the greatest masterpieces of world literature, clearly demonstrates both the epic and mythological dimensions of Iranian culture and provides significant potential for narratological analysis. This study examines the narrative of “The Haft khan Rostam” based on Gérard Genette’s theory of narrative time, aiming to uncover the intellectual, cultural, and identity-related aspects of Iranian mythology along with certain universal human ideals. Employing a mixed qualitative–quantitative approach, the research shows that despite some anachronies, the narrative largely follows a successive order, and Ferdowsi’s poetic strategies render deviations from chronological sequence largely imperceptible. Among the components of narrative duration, pause and simultaneous narration are used more frequently, while iterative frequency plays a notably more significant role than repetitive frequency. Ferdowsi’s control of narrative time enhances cohesion between story time and narrative time. Variations in duration serve as opportunities for conveying meta-textual meanings: simultaneous narration appears mainly in dialogues, while pauses occur in detailed descriptions of settings and battles, often with hyperbolic elements. Most events follow singulative frequency, and iterative frequency helps convey deeper meanings; repetitive frequency is generally absent. This analysis clearly demonstrates that Ferdowsi skillfully employs narrative time to reinforce both epic and identity-oriented dimensions, thereby highlighting the Shahnameh’s cultural significance and universal value.
