[English]

In the contemporary period, influenced by the West, new attitudes about love spread in Iranian culture, and women novelists tried to reflect this issue in their works and express their views on the impact of these types of love on women's lives. Based on this, the aim of this research is to investigate the types of love and their feminist criticism in the novel Bamdad-e Khomar by Fatane Haj Seyyed Javadi, based on Giddens and Rappaport's point of view and based on documentary method. The analysis of the types of love between the characters of this story, the contrast between romantic love and erotic love and their feminist criticism are among the topics investigated in this research. The research results indicate that in the novel “Bamdad-e Khomar”, Mahbubeh initially confronts a patriarchal system rooted in romantic love. However, because the prevailing form of love in society—passionate and attitudinal—is patriarchal, love often causes women to become more dependent and vulnerable. When Mahbubeh marries, Mansour based on romantic love, the mutual affection between them grants her independence and personal freedom. Therefore, according to Haj Seyedjavadi, when there is a balance of love between a man and a woman, love can lead to a woman's liberation and happiness.
Introduction
The transformation of marriage and intimate relationships in modern Iranian society is closely linked to broader processes of social change, modernization, and the gradual emergence of individual choice in personal life. In this context, literature has become a crucial platform for representing and examining the tensions between tradition and modernity, particularly from the perspective of women. Iranian women writers have used fiction not only to narrate emotional experiences but also to challenge patriarchal values, expose gender inequality, and articulate female identity within restrictive social structures. Fataneh Haji-Seyed-Javadi’s novel “Bamdad-e Khomar” holds a significant place in this discourse because it presents love not merely as a private emotion but as a social and ideological phenomenon shaped by power relations, family expectations, and gendered norms. This study focuses on the novel’s portrayal of love and marriage to examine how emotional bonds can either reinforce women’s dependence or create opportunities for autonomy. More specifically, the article explores the various forms of love depicted in “Bamdad-e Khomar” and offers a feminist critique of these forms by drawing on Anthony Giddens’ theory of love and Rappaport’s perspective on gender inequality. In doing so, the study aims to demonstrate how Haji-Seyed-Javadi transforms a popular novel into a critical reflection on the condition of women in patriarchal society.
Method
This research employs a qualitative and interpretive approach grounded in close textual analysis. The novel is analyzed through two complementary theoretical perspectives. First, Giddens’ concepts of intimacy and the transformation of love in modern society offer a conceptual framework for differentiating between various types of emotional attachment. This framework is particularly useful for distinguishing between romantic love and sensual love within the narrative. Second, Rappaport’s feminist perspective on gender inequality is employed to evaluate the power imbalance between men and women, particularly within domestic and marital relationships. The study interprets the novel’s characters, plot developments, and emotional conflicts as literary representations of deeper social structures. It pays special attention to the protagonist’s relationship with Rahim, the failure of her first marriage, and the contrast between this relationship and her subsequent marriage to Mansur. Through this approach, the analysis connects individual emotional experiences to broader cultural and social conditions. Consequently, this method allows the research to interpret the novel not only as a love story but also as a critique of patriarchal marriage, female dependency, and the lack of reciprocal respect in gender relations.
Conclusion
The study concludes that “Bamdad-e Khomar” offers a feminist critique of patriarchal love and marriage by contrasting destructive romantic idealization with more equitable forms of intimacy. Haji-Seyed-Javadi argues that women’s liberation cannot be achieved through passion alone, especially when passion functions within an unequal social structure. The novel, therefore, redefines love as a social relationship that must be evaluated in terms of justice, reciprocity, and power. Mahboubeh’s journey from romantic dependence to a more balanced marital partnership reflects the author’s broader concern with women’s autonomy and the conditions necessary for their growth. From a feminist perspective, the novel emphasizes that genuine love becomes transformative only when men and women meet as equals and when women are empowered through education and social change to resist dependency. In this way, *Bamdad-e Khomar* not only narrates a personal tragedy but also advances a broader critique of gender hierarchy in Iranian society. The novel ultimately positions love as a force that can either reinforce domination or contribute to freedom, depending on the social conditions in which it is formed.
Results
The findings indicate that the novel presents two fundamentally different models of love. Mahboubeh’s attachment to Rahim is initially characterized by romantic love: an intense, idealized, and emotionally consuming form of attachment that is often disconnected from practical realities.  This love is characterized by the protagonist’s desire for emotional union, her fascination with idealized images of the beloved, and her willingness to defy social constraints in the name of personal feeling. However, the study finds that this romantic love is inherently unstable because it develops in a context where women lack social power and men are not educated to embrace equality in intimate relationships.  Rahim, in contrast, is associated with sensual love, which is rooted more in bodily desire, self-interest, and multiple attachments than in commitment or mutual responsibility. His behavior reveals a lack of ethical balance in the relationship and exposes the gendered double standard that grants men greater freedom while placing women under greater moral and emotional pressure. The analysis also demonstrates that Mahboubeh’s romantic love does not lead to liberation in the initial stage of the novel. Instead, it heightens her vulnerability by isolating her from social support and placing her in a dependent position. In this context, the novel illustrates that love alone cannot transform patriarchal relations unless it is accompanied by education, awareness, and structural equality. The protagonist’s emotional idealism becomes a source of pain because it is not reciprocated by equal commitment or supported by a just social order. Nevertheless, the novel does not reject love itself. Instead, it critiques unequal forms of love and suggests that emotional fulfillment becomes meaningful only when accompanied by equality and mutual recognition. This is evident in the portrayal of Mahboubeh’s second marriage to Mansur, which is depicted as more balanced and respectful. In this relationship, the protagonist experiences increased independence, emotional stability, and personal freedom, suggesting that love can foster female self-realization when it is founded on equality rather than domination.
