Ecofeminist Criticism of “Dele foolaad” by Moniroo Ravanipoor

Eco-feminist critique is a contemporary approach in sociological studies that explores the relationship between women and nature. This theory is based on the premise that the oppression of women is interconnected with the oppression of nature. The goal of eco-feminism is to address and resolve these forms of oppression.  In the field of literary criticism, this school seeks to uncover the patriarchal layers within texts. Although this approach is not widely known, many works of Persian literature can be analyzed from this perspective. All of Ravanipour’s works are suitable for eco-feminist criticism due to the author’s sympathy for women trapped in patriarchal society on one hand, and her love for nature and concern for it in industrial society on the other.  Dele Foulaad reflects an eco-feminist perspective more than any other work by exploring the life of women and their connection to the orange tree, which symbolizes the bond between women and nature. This research, adopting an eco-feminist approach, aims to examine the relationship between women and nature and the dominance exerted by a male-dominated society over both in Dele Foulaad. The research showed that, in the eco-feminist analysis, both the main character of the story and the orange tree are affected by the oppressive forces of patriarchal society. This influence is evident in the tree’s drying up and in Afsaneh’s mother’s death. On the other hand, Afsaneh, a dynamic character within this patriarchal structure, responds by changing the course of her life throughout the story, transforming from a weak woman at the beginning to a powerful woman by the end. The novel contains many eco-feminist elements, illustrated by the caring and empathetic relationship between the main character and the orange tree, a symbol of femininity. This connection highlights their shared responses to the oppression imposed by a misogynistic society.
Introduction
The intricate relationship between women and nature has long been a subject of mythological, sociological, and literary inquiry. In many cultures, the earth is equated with the female body—a parallel that has historically justified the simultaneous exploitation of both. Ecofeminism, as a critical framework, posits that the patriarchal hegemony responsible for the oppression of women is inherently linked to the degradation of the environment. According to foundational theorists such as Karen Warren, the "logic of domination" operates through binary oppositions, relegating both nature and women to inferior, subservient positions.
In contemporary Persian literature, this discourse has gained significant momentum, enabling new interpretations of modern texts. Moniroo Ravanipoor, a prominent Iranian novelist, frequently explores the intersections of gender, trauma, and environment, particularly within the socio-cultural landscape of southern Iran. Her novel “Dele Foulaad” (Heart of Steel) serves as a poignant case study for ecofeminist analysis. The novel portrays the life of Afsaneh, a woman confined by the rigid structures of a patriarchal society, whose emotional and physical journey is deeply intertwined with her symbolic connection to an orange tree. This research examines how Ravanipoor employs ecofeminist elements to expose male-dominated power structures while simultaneously exploring possibilities for female agency and ecological consciousness. The study aims to address two primary questions: First, to what extent does “Dele Foolaad” reflect ecofeminist themes? Second, does the protagonist’s journey offer a potential model for societal awareness and resistance against patriarchal ideologies?
Methodology
This research employs a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach grounded in the theoretical framework of ecofeminism. The methodology centers on "cultural ecofeminism," which explores the socio-historical and symbolic construction of the relationship between women and nature. By analyzing narrative elements, character development, and key symbols—specifically the orange tree, the "dictator" figure, and the metaphor of "saltwater"—this study deconstructs the power dynamics shaping the protagonist’s life. The analysis draws on Val Plumwood’s perspectives regarding the dualism of nature and culture, as well as broader feminist critiques of societal structures. Data collection involves a close reading of the text “Dele Foulaad”, identifying specific instances where environmental and gendered oppressions intersect.
Results and Discussion
The findings of this study demonstrate that Dele foolaad is a significant ecofeminist text, effectively utilizing symbolic representation to critique patriarchal dominance. The analysis reveals three major findings:
 

The Symbolic Correspondence of Woman and Nature: The orange tree serves as the central ecofeminist symbol in the novel. The narrative establishes a direct, sympathetic connection between the protagonist, Afsaneh, and the tree. When Afsaneh endures societal judgment and patriarchal abuse, the tree withers and dries up. Conversely, as Afsaneh embarks on her journey toward self-awareness and independence, the tree begins to revive. This dual experience reinforces the ecofeminist premise that the suffering of the female body and the degradation of the natural world are inextricably linked under patriarchal rule.
The "Dictator" and Patriarchal Hegemony: The character of the "dictator"—a symbolic internal and external force of oppression—represents the monolithic structure of patriarchy. This figure restricts Afsaneh’s agency, aiming to block her view of the sky, the sun, and the natural world, thereby enforcing her isolation. Research shows that as long as the protagonist validates the "dictator" through submissive behavior, her femininity remains stifled. The eventual decline of this figure in the narrative mirrors Afsaneh’s maturation and her decision to move beyond the traditional binary of "weak woman versus dominant man."
The Metaphor of Saltwater and Cultural Toxicity: The "saltwater"—symbolizing both literal tears and the bitter, salty critiques from society—acts as a toxic agent that stunts the growth of both the woman and the tree. Ravanipoor skillfully uses this metaphor to demonstrate that societal pressure is not merely an abstract concept; it is an active, corrosive force. However, the narrative trajectory reveals that by "changing the soil" (a metaphor for gaining education and new experiences in Tehran), Afsaneh learns to neutralize this toxicity and cultivate a new, independent identity.

The presence of supportive, non-oppressive male figures, such as Siavash, introduces a counter-narrative, suggesting that the reconciliation of gender and nature is possible only when the "logic of domination" is replaced by empathy and mutual respect.
Conclusion
Dele foulaad provides a compelling narrative that aligns with the core tenets of ecofeminist theory. Through the skilled deployment of symbolism, Ravanipoor successfully translates the abstract concept of "oppression" into tangible, felt experiences. The research concludes that the novel does not merely document the victimhood of women and nature; rather, it documents the process of awakening. Afsaneh’s evolution from a silenced, "withered" woman to an assertive, empowered individual serves as a critique of the stagnant cultural norms of her society. By integrating environmental consciousness with feminist resistance, the novel functions as an educational tool, encouraging readers to recognize the underlying patriarchal structures that govern both social relations and our treatment of the natural environment. Thus, Dele foolaad stands as a significant contribution to contemporary Persian literature, offering a vital perspective on the intersectional nature of environmental and social justice.
