Abstract

The old interpretations of the Holy Quran in Persian language are important from many aspects; among these prominent and ancient interpretations is "Tafsir-e Surābādi" written in the fifth century 11. This work can be examined from various literary and rhetorical perspectives. In this research, Sourābādi's "storytelling method" has been investigated and analyzed. The research was done by descriptive-analytical method with library and document mining tools. The main question of the research is what methods and techniques Surābādi has paid attention to in this work in narrating and telling the stories of the prophets, and how these methods are compatible with the methods of the ancient interpretations and how different they are from them. The results of the study show that this interpretation is not a mere retelling of religious narratives, but rather Surābādi's way is attention to the literature of the language and to the artistic and tasteful narration of stories; to the extent that the most brilliant artistic and aesthetic way of looking at Islamic theology can be seen in the stories of this interpretation in a continuous and comprehensive way. Mystical thinking is prominent in this interpretation and it was also effective in its storytelling method. The most important characteristics of his storytelling are "visualization" of events and details of narrations, "conversation-oriented" in storytelling, "mention of details" in description, "beautiful and polished prose", "poetic plot", "attention to the symbolic nature of numbers". Each of these cases has been explained and analyzed in this article by citing several examples.
